Mashup Editor

We have been tinkering around in the background with how we wanted to let advanced users get the most out of our core technology. The ’slice’ engine is capable of some pretty clever things which are beyond the simple stream reading interface we have, and we would not want to complicate it just for the sake of it. So we set about building separate interface that would let you further customize your slices.

I have included a few screen shots of the editor which you can click on to get high-res versions, plus there is a video at the bottom. The editor is all nice shiny Ajax and lets you create custom slices very quickly.

Along with the editor we have another new feature which we think will hopefully allow users to share interesting content with ease. You have heard of http://tinyurl.com/ (great site we use it a lot) which lets you quickly share a link to another webpage, well a ‘fav.or.it ID’ (we need a better name! suggestions please) allows you to share a slice of content with just one unique number. The number is generated whenever you slice our content in a different way, you can then use our little widget that lets you post that slice to digg, reddit, del.icio.us or email to friend. Or you can just type that number into any of the search boxes within fav.or.it and it will switch to that content.

Just thinking about the one thing that would get me to switch from Google Reader, assuming you do the three things Scoble claims you can do. That would be to have one collection of feeds with the ability to publish to multiple ’shared links’ streams. I, like many people, contribute to many blogs/websites/social networking sites and would like to be able to tailor my feed slice to the different audiences at each different site I write for.

For instance, an article that appears in my RSS stream on Cooking at Walt Disney World might work in a shared links steam for both my food blog and The Disney Blog. Where a post on career hunting at Disney would work on my job search blog and The Disney Blog. But cooking wouldn’t work so well on the job search blog and vica versa. So the ability to target a ’share’ is important.

    John,

A slice can be a combination of many different things, so you can easily make a slice that is your feed (or feeds) but then filtered down to just a particular category/tag, and then that slice is available as a new feed or republished as a new site.

We are also working on what we call ‘libraries’ which are collections of specific posts which would give you even finer granular control.

If you ever want to see a reader’s feedback :) , I rate this article for four from five. Detailed info, but I have to go to that damn yahoo to find the missed parts. Thanks, anyway!
